St Alcuin College for the Liberal Arts Program Guide

This guide is intended to provide an overview of the continuum of learning at St Alcuin College. Our program is creative and individually designed for your child; it is challenging, fleksibel dan disesuaikan untuk pertumbuhan peribadi dan pencapaian. Based on its classical roots, our curriculum focuses on a broad base of learning within the languages, kemanusiaan, sains dan matematik. Not only is such a program rigorous, it is a course of study that promotes personal growth and development while refining critical-thinking and communication skills.

Junior School (Tadika hingga Gred 5)

In the Junior School, we create a learning environment that nurtures creative, physical, social and cognitive growth. Each child’s unique interests are valued. Children are encouraged to investigate actively, to discover new ideas and to work cooperatively.

Program Design

The Junior School learning environment is based on an emergent approach to learning. In order to meet the individual requirements of each student, parents will meet with the teacher to provide input in determining the year goals. Learning will be thematic, covering a broad range of curricular areas (including language arts, social studies, science, math, physical education and art). The number of students in the class is limited to 15.

Middle School (Grades 6 to 9)

In the Middle School, students will benefit from a contextual approach that focuses on participating actively and responsibly in a supportive educational environment. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as acquiring factual knowledge. Higher-level thinking, critical analysis and research-based inquiry skills will be introduced. Students will have the opportunity to explore in greater depth areas of learning that are of interest and engage significantly with experts in the community.

Course Selection Guidelines

Students and their parents will meet with the Head of School to determine a program of studies for the coming year. Courses on offer are authorized by the BC Ministry of Education and meet provincial prescribed learning outcomes.

Students in Grades 6-9 are required to take the following courses: English, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Physical Education, French, Mentoring, an Applied Skills elective and a Fine Arts elective. The number of students enrolled in a class is limited to 15. All elective courses are subject to a minimum enrolment, scheduling requirements and available resources.

Senior School (Grades 10 to 12)

In the Senior School, students will benefit from an approach that focuses on higher-level thinking, critical analysis and research-based inquiry. Through their course work, students will engage significantly with experts in the community. Our goal is to help our students build a portfolio of educational experiences that will highlight their strengths and help provide direction for further learning. All students will choose a program of studies that will lead to the completion of the BC Ministry of Education Dogwood Diploma.

Graduation Requirements

Academic planning and course selection is a very important process in the Senior School years. Requirements for graduation in the province of British Columbia, as outlined in the Graduation Program by the Ministry of Education, are quite specific. Students will need to earn 48 credits from required courses, 28 credits from elective courses, dan 4 credits from Graduation Transitions. Graduation requirements are introduced to students in the Planning 10 course.

The Graduation Program requires that students write provincial exams in the following courses: English 10, Mathematics 10, Science 10, Social Studies 11, and English 12. In Grades 10 dan 11, the provincial exams are worth 20% of the student’s final grade. In Grade 12, the provincial exam is worth 40% of the student’s final grade. Qualification for a provincial scholarship is based on the results of these five provincial examinations.

Course Selection Guidelines

Students and their parents will meet with the Head of School to determine a program of studies for the coming year. Courses on offer are authorized by the BC Ministry of Education and exceed provincial prescribed learning outcomes. Advanced Placement courses will also be made available where appropriate.

Based on course requests, the timetable is created and staffing decisions are made. The number of students enrolled in a class is limited to 15. The school holds the right to assign students to alternate options should the maximum number of students within any elective subject be reached. Courses are subject to minimum enrolment, scheduling requirements and available resources. If numbers are not sufficient for a particular course, alternative options will be explored such as online learning through www.learnnowbc.ca.

Elective courses will be tailored to the student’s interests. We strive to provide a comprehensive program that will allow a student to explore their interests fully. We are proud to offer a pre-engineering option that will include a competitive robotics program.
